About

I discovered UX while having breakfast in a Wetherspoons.

I haven't looked back since.

How I got here

I studied Biological Sciences at Liverpool, which sounds like a strange place to start a design career. But learning to observe carefully, form hypotheses and work out why things behave the way they do turned out to be useful grounding for UX, even if I didn't know it at the time.

After graduating I tried a few things across property, customer service and pest control before finding my footing. I was figuring it out as I went, which I suspect is more common than most CVs let on.

The moment I caught the UX bug was on Rentokil's graduate scheme. I was tasked with finding an innovation for the business and getting nowhere, until one morning I ordered breakfast on the Wetherspoons app without even thinking about it. I put my phone down and thought, why doesn't Rentokil's app work like this? That question led me to Figma, YouTube tutorials, a brilliant mentor who helped me think properly about the work, and eventually presenting my ideas to senior leaders.

I then joined Santander as a Fraud Agent, spending every day using i-Exchange, the bank's internal knowledge base, to serve customers. It was full of bugs and usability problems and it drove me mad. So I did what felt natural, I approached the product owner with my own ideas for fixing it. They offered me a role on the team. It didn't take long before I was involved with two other colleague support platforms too, which you can read about in my case studies.

From there I moved to Matalan as Product Designer, where I'm building a design system from scratch, leading a platform migration and doing some of the most interesting discovery work of my career so far.

Mentorship has been a constant throughout. I've been lucky to have people willing to invest time in me and I try to pay that forward through NUX and the wider community.

Giving back

I currently volunteer for NUX Manchester and Liverpool and have previously spoken at events about breaking into UX as a career switcher. If you're navigating that transition and want a chat, my LinkedIn is always open.

Beyond work

Marathon runner, gym goer, Cockapoo owner. Currently building this site from scratch in VS Code and Claude Code, which is either a brilliant idea or a terrible one depending on the day.
